LO6: Social Media vs Traditional Media

Artic Monkeys and Stormzy's use of Social media

In the early 2000s Arctic Monkeys used apps such as Myspace and SoundCloud to promote their music and build a fanbase to give them enough fame to be recognised by the music industry. However, this worked out really well for the band as not only did they get really popular on Myspace and SoundCloud but have now became one of the most successful UK bands of all time. Other Artists since then have kicked off their fame from using SoundCloud such as Post Malone in 2015 released a song on SoundCloud called White Iverson which would be shared from SoundCloud by his fans and would globally go viral.

In 2014 Stormzy did a underground freestyling scene in South London for LinkUpTV who try and support underground UK rappers and get them to fame. They do this by uploading the freestyles on to YouTube for their audience, which is where people would start to recognise his talent. The video would get over 10 million views on YouTube. Stormzy continued posting on YouTube growing his fanbase after each video. Stormzy won his first MOBO in 2014 as his DreamersDeseaseEP came number 1 in the music charts on iTunes HipHop/Rap charts.
Even now in fame Stormzy continues to interact with his fanbase to keep them engaged by reposting tweets that have mentioned him, and encourage fans to favorite his tweets regarding events he hosts, such as Thorpe Park by encouraging fans to favorite his tweets.
